An iPhone app, released to coincide with a major exhibition of René Magritte’s work at Tate Liverpool. The ‘Magritte Your World’ camera based app invites people to take pictures of their favourite views or landmarks and ‘Magritte’ them, by overlaying an animation inspired by ‘Golconda’, one of the artist’s most famous paintings. Suited, booted and bowler-hatted businessmen rain from the sky in an interactive and contemporary interpretation of Magritte’s own surreal painting. Short videos of the animation can be recorded and shared with friends on Flickr and Facebook.

The Tate App is available for free from the App Store and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.

A digital installation at the Bluecoat Gallery Liverpool to mark the anniversary of what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his death in 1980. The project, formed part of the city’s season of events paying tribute to Lennon. Members of the public were invited to get on a bed and show their support for peace. We collected 300 images in 2 hours and over 500 people took part.

A film of the installation was screened on 9th December on Ocean’s media screen (Europe’s largest commercial LED screen), opposite Liverpool Lime Street to coincide with the UK anniversary of Lennon’s death.

Tate Liverpool’s exhibition explored the post-war period of the artist’s life, focusing on a period when Picasso was a member of the French Communist Party and actively involved in politics and the peace movement during the Cold War.

Dorothy worked on the launch campaign for the exhibition, designing a bespoke font inspired by the iconic posters of the Paris May ‘68 uprisings, capturing the spirit of post-war social uprisings and protests in Europe. Dorothy used the font across all press, outdoor and online advertising. The typeface was also used across exhibition branding and on Picasso merchandise sold in the Tate store, including a ‘Give Picasso a Chance’ limited edition poster designed by Dorothy.

Available to buy.

80% of the world’s poorest countries have suffered conflict in the past 15 years and 90% of war victims are civilian. In 2009 Ctrl.Alt.Shift launched a campaign to raise awareness of the catastrophic impact conflict has on communities. Dorothy was asked to develop a mechanic that could be sent to a small number of press contacts and advocators to help push the issue further up the social and political agenda.

Dorothy’s set of alternative xmas decorations were designed to act as a stark reminder of the of the reality of war and how communities are torn apart by violent conflict. Packs were mailed out to press and peers, receiving good coverage in print and exceptional coverage online.

Limited edition packs were manufactured and distributed by SUCK UK and were available to buy for a limited period on the high street and from independent design stores across Europe (The Baltic, The Design Museum, Saatchi Gallery). For each pack sold a donation was made to Ctrl.Alt.Shift to support their campaign against global conflict.

The hell of war comes home. In July 2009 Colorado Springs Gazettea published a two-part series entitled “Casualties of War”. The articles focused on a single battalion based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, who since returning from duty in Iraq had been involved in brawls, beatings, rapes, drunk driving, drug deals, domestic violence, shootings, stabbings, kidnapping and suicides. Returning soldiers were committing murder at a rate 20 times greater than other young American males. A seperate investigation into the high suicide rate among veterans published in the New York Times in October 2010 revealed that three times as many California veterans and active service members were dying soon after returning home than those being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. We hear little about the personal hell soldiers live through after returning home.

The last few years have been pretty grim, characterised by greed, corruption and lies. Corporations and individuals have been acting in their own best interests at the expense of others.

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, with its unwavering faith in humanity, is one of our all time favourite films. Although it flopped at the box office in 1946, it’s a classic tale that we feel is as relevant now as it was all those decades ago. With the help of some friends we’ve retold the story of George Bailey in an illustrated book of verse. The hard back case bound book has a white cloth cover and is foiled in metallic gold.

In December 2009 Dorothy produced 125 copies of the book. Only 25 copies are being signed and sold.

Part of the Cult Fiction series of illustrated books

Dorothy created art work and imagery to promote five winning short films by up and coming film makers. Each film examined a different global issue – war and peace, gender and power and HIV and stigma. Actors involved included Julian Barrett (Mighty Boosh) and Martin Freeman (The Office). Soundtracks were recorded by Young Knives, Chipmunk, Shy Child, Metronomy and Jesca Hoop.

Dorothy used different designers and artists to tackle different films to keep the posters eclectic. Thanks to our friends at Music for designing ‘No Way Through’.

Design Week Award nomination – 2010
