Anthony Burrill - About the Artist

Internationally renowned graphic artist Anthony Burrill is known for his striking, bold and optimistic messages. This summer, we’re delighted to be showcasing and selling a selection of Anthony Burrill’s works on paper in our studio gallery in Liverpool. Discover more about Anthony, his distinctive approach to design, and the creative process behind his work below.

About Anthony:

In 2004, Anthony began working closely with letterpress print workshop Adams of Rye on an ongoing series of woodblock posters. The traditional workshop continues to use letterpress and wood type, some of which the firm have owned for over a hundred years.

Letterpress printing is a traditional technique where hand carved wooden type or image blocks are coated in ink and pressed directly onto paper. It leaves behind a crisp, inked impression, often creating a tactile, indented feel on the paper.

Arguably one of Anthony's most iconic pieces Work Hard & Be Nice To People was the first he created at Adams of Rye in 2004. The bold, simple statement set the tone for his future work – straightforward communication through the power of words and some gentle humour.

Anthony continued to collaborate with the letterpress workshop to create his other well known typographic works such as I Like It. What Is It? and Ask More Questions. Others including Question Everything and Me & You are currently on display in our studio as part of the exhibition.
